There is a fine line between shame and guilt. But it is distinct and they are different. Shame is what others (society) place on us which may result in feelings of guilt. Guilt serves us. It is an internal feeling or emotion that we can grow from and learn from.
However, guilt is only purposeful when its intensity is proportionate to the circumstance. The duration of the feelings of guilt should not go beyond that which is reasonable. Guilt is suitable in the correct context involving the impact that we may have caused on another. Guilt need not be avoided but guilt DOES need to be kept in check. Guilt is our own. We can control our guilt.
